Brand Love - Givenchy

We all know Givenchy for the beautiful Antigona bag. I literally swoon over these bags whenever we get one in. The House of Givenchy has been around for over 50 years, and loved by icons such as Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn. Lets take at the history of Givenchy.

In the beginning

Hubert de Givenchy was born in 1927, and gained a love for fabrics from his grandmother. He left home at 17  and moved to Paris to pursue his interest in fashion. He made a name for himself when he became an apprentice for the Italian designer Elsa Shiaperelli.

First collection

He established his own couture house in 1952. What really set him aside from other designers at that time was his 'separates collection', compiled of blouses and floor length skirts.

Givenchy  met Audrey Hepburn in 1953, and the two really clicked. He designed her personal wardrobe and also her outfits in the movie Sabrina and Breakfast at Tiffany's. When Givenchy launched his perfume in 1957, Audrey Hepburn promoted it.

Givenchy today

After years of success, Givenchy sold his line to Louis Vuitton in 1995. Designers such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Julien Macdonald have all worked as creative directors for Givenchy. Today Givenchy lives in an estate outside Paris, and has totally distanced himself from the fashion world. His work has been shown in exhibitions around the world and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers in America.
