Notes on the piece.
“Rayée” canvas (often spelled Rayee, from the French “rayée” meaning “striped”) is one of the early historic canvases used by Louis Vuitton. It’s quite rare, collectible, and has an interesting place in LV’s evolution. The Rayée canvas was used by Louis Vuitton roughly from 1872 to 1888.
It was introduced as a way to modify the look of the trunks (which previously used the Grey Trianon canvas starting about 1858) and to make them more distinctive. One of the motivations for the stripes was to help with brand identity and to reduce the risk of counterfeiting.

Design & Material
Appearance: It’s a striped pattern. The stripes are usually of two colours. There were different colour combinations over time, including red-&-white stripes, beige & brown, etc.
Canvas type: It was a coated canvas (leather-trimmed, with brass hardware etc) used on trunks: steamer trunks, hat boxes, etc. It had functional features like handles, locks, etc typical of trunks of that period.
Succession & Transition
The Rayée usage overlapped with earlier and later canvases: Grey Trianon preceded it; Damier pattern was introduced around 1888, which more or less replaced the striped Rayée for many trunk designs.

Standards of Condition
Pristine: Brand new never used. Items show no signs of being worn and tags are attached.
Excellent: Tags are not attached but Items are in perfect condition. Items show only faint signs of gentle wear, such as light scuffs to surface.
Very Good: Light to moderate visible signs of use. Items may have slightly worn corners, minor scuffs or tarnishing to hardware, lightening to fabric, or small stains and snags. Shoes may have scuffing to soles.
Good: Items show more prominent wear such as noticeable discoloration, stains and snags to fabric. May have worn corners and handles, tarnishing to hardware and creasing to leather. Pen or make up marks may be visible in the interior of the bag.
Fair: Very prominent wear, may have holes on corners, severe scuffs, piping of bag showing and pen marks to exterior. Interior may have pen or make up marks.
